A flip top cap, also known as a flip-top closure, sport cap, or toggle cap, is a type of dispensing closure characterized by a hinged lid that "flips" open and closed. The lid is often actuated with one hand, making it a popular choice for convenience and portability.
The core function is to provide a re-sealable, leak-resistant seal for a container while allowing for controlled dispensing.
The mechanism is simple but effective:
Opening: The user applies upward pressure to a protruding lever or the front edge of the lid. This pivots the lid on its hinge, exposing the dispensing port underneath.
Dispensing: The product (liquid, gel, powder) is squeezed or poured out through the now-open port.
Closing: The user presses the lid down until it snaps audibly back into place. A plug or seal on the inside of the lid re-engages with the dispensing port, creating a tight closure to prevent leaks and contamination.
Hinged Lid: The top part that flips open and closed. It often has a textured surface or lever for easy opening.
Hinge: The flexible plastic bridge that connects the lid to the base. It's designed to withstand thousands of open/close cycles without breaking. Common types include a living hinge (a thin, flexible section of plastic) or a pinned hinge.
Internal Plug/Seal: A protruding ring or cone on the underside of the lid. This is the most critical part for preventing leaks. It fits snugly into the dispensing orifice to create an airtight and liquid-tight seal when closed.
Base Skirt (Closure): The lower part that screws or snaps onto the container's neck. It houses the dispensing orifice.
Dispensing Orifice: The opening through which the product flows.
Tamper-Evident Band: Many flip tops come with a perforated band that breaks away upon first opening, providing evidence that the product has been used.
